The NRC is seeking public input on its draft environmental assessment (EA) for Kairos Power’s construction permit application (CPA) for the Hermes 2 Demonstration Plant to be built in Oak Ridge. This is a normal and expected part of the licensing process, and anyone with an interest in the project is encouraged to get involved.
The Hermes 2 plant will be licensed for two units that would supply electricity to the grid and be located next to the Hermes Demonstration Reactor at the East Tennessee Technology Park Heritage Center site.
Based on its review of Kairos Power's environmental report, the NRC staff has made a preliminary determination that a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) is warranted for Hermes 2 and an Environmental Assessment (EA) is sufficient, such that an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) will not be required. The use of an EA instead of an EIS for Hermes 2 expedites the environmental review process while still ensuring a thorough evaluation of environmental impacts in keeping with Kairos Power’s mission to protect the environment.
If you are so inclined, please share your thoughts on the Hermes 2 EA with the NRC. You can submit comments until May 28, 2024, via email to Kairos-Hermes2Environmental@nrc.gov or via the regulations.gov website (include Docket ID NRC-2023-0138 in website comments).
